Frequently Asked Questions!

Hello delegates! Here are some frequently asked questions that we thought might be helpful to answer! Please email us at ecofinbmunlxix@bmun.org if you have any further questions or please do not hesitate to ask during committee:

  • Should proposed solutions focus just on your country, or should it be globally focused?

Proposed solutions for BMUN should focus on the welfare of the international community, seeing as this is a simulated conference held by the United Nations. Although it is still important to keep country policy in mind when formulating your solutions (i.e. how much economic stimulus would a country like Ghana be willing to provide on an international scale?), one must focus solutions on providing solutions to the problem at hand on a global level.

  • Do I need to cite everything I say that is not completely obvious?

Within position papers, it is important to cite statistics and factual statements included. In addition, it is advised that you should not make opinionated statements that are not quotes from a figure or supported by a legitimate source. Within committee, please ensure that statistics and facts included in your speeches and moderated caucus statements are backed by reliable sources, and are preferably sources provided by branches of the UN, academic journals/publications, or reliable news sources.

  • What are SMART resolutions?

SMART solutions are an acronym that stands for resolutions that are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-oriented. It is important that solutions written within resolutions include these factors. For example, within our first topic regarding reconstruction of the economy as a result of the COVID-induced recession, a SMART solution would contain information about details of an economic stimulus package, measures on how to distribute that package amongst countries, in what timespan the aid will be distributed, etc.

  • Where can I find BMUN formatting and the topic synopsis?

For information on formatting for position papers and other information you can find it all on our website https://learnbmun.squarespace.com/position-paper-overview. Here you will see a comprehensive overview of the breakdown of the paper structure, as well as tips and advice on how to complete it. In addition, this site holds a lot of information on the conference coming up that will aid you with any general information and or questions you may have.

  • What information should be provided in the Past and Current International Action (i.e. can we repeat information in the topic synopsis?)?

When approaching the Past and Current International Action section, it is best to avoid using, summarizing, or paraphrasing, the topic synopsis. While obviously there is some information that may be mentioned or used, the intent of the synopsis is to serve as a starting point for which you can then continue to research your own information and use that then for the section. Thus, for this section, one should look to find information that applies to all the nations and refrains from being country specific. The intent of this is to set the topic and establish a holistic understanding of the topic at hand without being too broad and or too specific.

  • Which Questions to Consider questions do I have to answer?

Out of the ones provided for each topic, you are supposed to have responded to only two of the questions. Responding to more than this per topic will not improve your score, so be sure to only respond to the two. And since you are responding to two per topic (A and B) that makes a total of four questions that will be answered.

  • How will the speaker's list work in the Zoom conference?

Within ECOFIN, each delegation will name themselves Country #1 and Country #2 and each delegate can divide their speaker time (in which the default will be 1:30 per speech) in whichever way they would like. They can divide the time equally during the speech, one delegate can speak the whole time, etc.
